Retired NFL star Rob Gronkowski goes all in on CBD
Former New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski, also known as “Gronk”, announced his retirement in March of 2019. He was able to rack up 3 Super Bowl wins along with 5 Pro Bowl appearances during his 9 year NFL career.
During those 9 years, Gronk was forced to miss 24 regular-season games due to multiple injuries such as: high ankle sprains, hip and chest bruises, forearm fractures, torn ACL and MCL, knee strains, torn hamstring, and multiple herniated disks. After all the pain and physical rehabilitation, the injuries have finally taken a toll Rob Gronkowski’s body.
At a press conference held on August 27th 2019, there was some hope that the former NFL superstar would announce that he would come out of retirement to play again. That was not the case. Instead, Gronk announced that the next chapter of his life will be to focus on the CBD industry. He partnered with the Rhode Island and Toronto-based company called Abacus Health, going for a new line of “all natural, fitness-oriented recovery products.”
“So now you can just call me ‘Mr. Recovery,’ [..] you know you like that name! Mr. Recovery, baby!” Gronkowski exclaimed when asked how he was dealing with his injuries. Now out of the NFL, Gronk has been using CBD, short for Cannabidiol, for treating his most recent injuries. The substance has gained popularity over the last couple of years for the therapeutic benefits, so Gronk knew he had to try it. See here for the Top 10 reasons why people buy CBD. He mentioned that he’s been using it since his retirement to deal with all the pain and punishment his body has gone through, and said that “for the first time in more than a decade I am pain free.”
One of the main reasons Gronkowski supports the CBD industry is the fact that it can be a great alternative to opioids for pain relief and management. He wants to take it to the NFL and other sports leagues to change their policy to allow the use of high grade CBD for recovery. Most leagues, like the NFL, still have the substance banned from use because it is still classified in the same family as marijuana, a plant containing the substance THC – which causes users to get high. “I [just] want the same opportunity for my friends and teammates out there. That’s why I’m advocating CBD to be acceptable for all players to be used for recovery,” Gronk said. More recently in the world of Golf, one of the all time greats, Phil Mickelson was seen to drop CBD under his tongue at the Masters. See the article here. Like many, Phil took opioid based prescriptions to treat his arthritis, though came with adverse side effects. Professional athletes are now turning their heads to CBD to avoid the negative repercussions.
During the press conference, Gronkowski was asked whether or not we would get to see him one more time on the field. He almost came close to shedding a tear after hearing the question, with the thoughts of his time playing in the NFL. “I feel that love but I want to be clear to my fans: I needed to recover. I was not in a good place,” Gronk said with emotional distress. “Football was bringing me down, and I didn’t like it. I was losing that joy in life. Like, joy. I really was and I was fighting through it and I knew what I signed up for and what I was fighting through and I knew I just had to fix myself.”
